Students hang-ten on a 3-day surfing camp at Goolwa
Northern Adelaide Senior College Sports Studies students learn how to hang-ten at Goolwa Beach as part of a three-day surfing camp this week.
“The Sports Studies camp was loads of fun. I would say one of the best excursions I’ve been on,” says Brayden S., a SACE Completer NASC student hoping to enter university as a physiotherapist.
“It was a two to two-and-a-half hour drive with lots of fun on the bus. When we got there, we set up our tents and from there we went straight to the beach and started surfing.
“I loved it and I got the first wave which was really good.”
Students were taught by Ocean Living Surf School team at Goolwa Beach in a three-day surfing workshop.
“They taught us well and I learnt a lot. For the first day we had three instructors teaching us what to do,” says Brayden.
“Phil was the main instructor where we got on the sand to practice how to stand up, the best positions to get into it. It was good fun.
“We were out there for maybe two hours or so and then we came back to the campsite and I went straight into the pool with my mates. At night we had a BBQ and went to bed early after a big day.
“It wasn’t too bad the sleep, but the ground was pretty hard. I forgot to blow up the mattress so it didn’t work out in my favour,” laughs Brayden.
“On the second day we woke up, had breakfast and went surfing again and finished around 12 for lunch at the bakery.
“We spent the rest of the day playing a few games of basketball and footy. Eventually it got to dinnertime and we had pizza and another early night after a big day.
On the last day they packed up early for a morning session on the waves.
“It was really good, it was probably my best day for surfing. The waves were pretty big.”
Brayden says that he’s always loved physical education, but he feels NASC goes above and beyond in teaching Sports Education.
“I love it. I absolutely love it. It’s one of my favourite subjects,” says Brayden.
“It’s good because you still get the knowledge you need for year 11 and 12, plus you get to have that extra bit of fun as well.
“You’ve also got a great teacher, Brett, he’s one of my favourite teachers at the school. He teaches it really well.”
“I was recommended NASC through my old school. At first I wasn’t too keen but I came here, but I met the staff, met the students, and I’m loving it.
“It’s definitely my favourite school, I wish I could stay longer. It’s really good.”
