Perk up with brunch at NASC

It’s safe to say there’s no sandwich more perfect than the grilled cheese.

At Northern Adelaide Senior College, cheese toasties are served warm with a smile in the HUB Breakout space for students in between morning classes.

“Brunch club is the NASC version of a breakfast club,” says Kelly MacAuley, Community Services Engagement Case Manager at NASC.

“Our students don’t tend to come in early so we thought we’d do it at recess. We get our food delivered from Foodbank and then supplement it with a bunch of our own.”

Foodbank supports schools like NASC by providing wholesome, nutritious food to improve the wellbeing and health of South Australian students.

“There’s always cheese toasties,” smiles Kevin T, a student completing his SACE at NASC.

“Every so often the school comes through with a few other bits and bobs like last week they had pumpkin soup and vegan chili. It was a good change of pace.”

Kelly says that it wasn’t always easy to entice students to free food when it first began in 2019.

“Initially we started with breakfast and had a very slow pickup,” says Kelly.

“We found it needed to be more accessible so once we moved it to recess and into this open space it has gone ahead in leaps and bounds.

“We initially had maybe 20 students in a whole week, now we would have 20-30 students every day.

“Most people are very happy. Some people would love some variety but unfortunately we’re limited with budget and time.”

Kevin jokes that he visits the brunch club more often than he should.

“It’s super convenient especially for those who get up in the morning and they’re like go-go-go,” says Kevin.

“It’s a good gathering place as well where people can meet and hang out and talk to people who they might not have talked to.”

Brunch club happens every day from 10:30am in the HUB Breakout Space on level 2.
