National Science Week: NASC dives into the deep blue
Virtual reality, science experiments, trivia, crafts and displays were exhibited to Northern Adelaide Senior College students and staff to celebrate National Science Week from 18th-20th August.
Science Week is celebrated throughout Australia annually as a way to embrace science and technology.
This year’s theme ‘Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans’ explores how humans innovate and navigate the deep ocean which covers over 70% of planet Earth.
It also aims to encourage an interest in science and STEM subjects among NASC students through various displays, activities and science experiments.
“I think it’s really important to get the information out there about the different areas of science and that science can be educational, but it can also be fun,” says Virginia, Leader of Science and Mathematics at Northern Adelaide Senior College.
“I think having an understanding of science is really important in being a global citizen. I think it plays an important role in how society functions.”
Virginia is impressed with how her science students organised the event over three days with the input from staff and teachers.
“I think the students did a fantastic job. It was varied and everyone was doing something different,” says Virginia.
“It was a part of their assessment as well, but the brief was pretty broad so the students could come up with an aspect of chemistry that they then wanted to run with as a display for science week.
“The feedback from different people was that students and teachers were enjoying the displays and found them really interesting.”
Jasmine M., a NASC student who organised the recyclable toy-making activity, enjoyed science week despite the stress involved.
“It gets people involved in science activities because some people think that science is hard and don’t even try because of how hard it is,” says Jasmine.
“But there’s some parts that you can make it easier to understand and make it interesting.
“I felt I wasn’t organised enough for Science Week. But I think people had a lot of fun and enjoyed the activity.”
Mohammad K., who had an interactive display on sharks, agrees that the event was stressful but a better way to meet educational outcomes.
“It was quite fun and it was interesting. It was definitely something different,” says Mohammad.
“It wasn’t your usual of writing essays but rather you have to think more creatively to meet the needs of your audience.”
“I think everyone had a whale of a good time,” says Lisa the NASC Librarian.
“I know I am happy as a clam!”
