Celebrating diversity for Harmony Day
Northern Adelaide Senior College EALD students celebrate the culmination of Harmony Week by hosting a multicultural lunch for staff and students last Friday.
Featuring live music, dancing and dishes from all over the world, NASC hopes to continue encouraging inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all of our students, regardless of cultural or linguistic background.
“We want to promote intercultural understanding at this school and it really comes down to creating and facilitating situations where people can have a genuine connection with others,” says Sam White, EALD teacher.
“We have well over 20-30 different cultures within this school and we always like to do something for Harmony Week.
“This year I had my EALD class turn it into a task where we did everything from studying poetry and songs about harmony, looking at videos and exploring the Harmony Week website, and deciding how we would celebrate Harmony Week as a class.
“We brainstormed and everyone contributed what they thought they wanted to contribute.
“It was everything from playing cultural music that was up on the screen as a video clip or actual singing or playing instruments.
“Someone also contributed Arabic dance and others wanted to cook their cultural food.
“It was always interesting to find out how many cultures are in our school, as there’s actually a lot of different backgrounds here.”
Students and staff were invited to provide quotes for Harmony Day in an effort to win a prize. Here are some of the submissions.
“Harmony Day is important to spread love, kindness and understanding.”
“Harmony means accepting and celebrating difference and embracing change.”
“Peace, unity and harmony. Sharing culture together.”
“What you really want will never come easy. If it was easy you wouldn’t appreciate it when you get it. Be ready success! I’m on my way to get you! You just need to tune your feelings like tuning a guitar for a better sound.”
“Always be happy. Life is beautiful.”
