Always Was, Always Will be. NASC students celebrate NAIDOC Week
Northern Adelaide Senior College honors NAIDOC Week, a celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Hosted at NASC from the 27th – 31st July, NASC students participated in a variety of Indigenous painting activities and culminated with a Something Wild inspired BBQ Lunch held on the HUB Rooftop.
NASC celebrates NAIDOC Week to allow students to participate in a range of activities and to show our support to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
Brandon S., an Aboriginal Studies student, facilitated rock painting last Tuesday, who chose the activity as it’s the easiest one to do and have everyone participate.
“I’m hosting a rock-painting activity for Aboriginal Studies,” says Brandon.
“I like Aboriginal studies because it’s my culture and it’s what I want to learn about.”
Painting is an important means of cultural expression and a vehicle for the transmission of Aboriginal culture.
“I saw it on the table,” says Jade C., a new Stage I NASC student who dragged her friend Isabella P., to rock painting during lunchtime.
“Painting is fun!”
Students and staff were also treated to a Something Wild BBQ on Friday featuring kangaroo, wild boar, venison and emu meats.
“Wild boar was very yummy and rich,” says Caroline Woods, caretaker at NASC.
“The venison was also very gamey and lean. I thought what the students and staff had done for NAIDOC Week was excellent and well done.”
