A GRIP on leadership at NASC

Northern Adelaide Senior College Student Voice Committee (SVC) members attended the GRIP Leadership Conference last Tuesday to learn how to be the best leaders for our school community.

Held in the city, the GRIP Student Leadership Conference concentrates on training student leaders for their role as school leaders and to provide them with a clear vision, a solid understanding and dozens of ideas for their time as a leader.

“The GRIP Leadership conference was very inspiring and I think that many students went there being inspired themselves on becoming their own leaders,” says Emily C., a NASC SVC leader.

Student leaders learned skills on seeking opportunities, time management, taking responsibility, hosting events, motivation and finding ways to make significant improvement to the school for all.

“We did a few fun things where people got on stage and they got to play a few fun games,” says Emily.

“We also had a booklet and in each of the sessions we got to write stuff down about ourselves and about others and were able to connect with other schools at the conference.

“I would say one of the biggest takeaways is how to become a leader in such a fast-paced environment and learning to cope in those environments as well as helping others to find leadership skills within themselves.”

Nasrin Q., an EALD student at NASC who went to the conference, joined the student voice committee because she wanted to improve her ability to communicate and create change within our multicultural cohort.

“For me it’s a bit hard to communicate with other people, but then I spoke to others about how I could find the confidence to talk with others,” says Nasrin.

“They said that the leadership class was the best way to find your confidence and learn how to communicate with other students and work as a team.”

“Leadership has been good. With second languages it can be very hard to progress quickly because English is not your language.

“During this Leadership conference I experienced a lot of progress and achieved a lot with other students.”

“I think that going to the conference is such a good idea because it gives you an insight into what adults as leaders can be as well as student leaders as well and to get that insight into what you can do to help others to become their own leaders,” agrees Emily.

The Student Voice Committee plan and hosts events and opportunities for Northern Adelaide Senior College students.

If you would like to enrol in year 11-13 at Northern Adelaide Senior College, it’s not too late. Enrol today or attend one of our Principal Tours held every first Friday of the month. Book your place with Students Services on (08) 7285 1600.
